Ocean State Veterinary Specialists Expands debuting a New ICU
Ocean State Veterinary Specialists (OSVS) is proud to announce the opening of its newly renovated Intensive Care Unit (ICU), equipped with advanced features to enhance care for patients requiring critical medical attention. The new ICU includes 10 large dog kennels and 4 cribs specifically designed for non-ambulatory large dogs, providing a range of care options based on their mobility and medical needs. In addition to spacious accommodations, the ICU features two isolation wards—one designated for respiratory isolation and the other for gastrointestinal (GI) isolation—ensuring that contagious conditions are managed in a controlled and safe environment. To support patients with respiratory challenges, the ICU now boasts four oxygen cages with HIFlow oxygen capabilities, offering vital, high-quality respiratory care.
This expansion highlights OSVS’s commitment to providing the highest standard of veterinary medicine, ensuring every patient receives the specialized care they deserve. The 15-month renovation added 10,000 square feet to the hospital, including a state-of-the-art ICU, an expanded pharmacy, dedicated teaching spaces, and offices for doctors and support staff. This new addition has significantly eased space limitations; previously, the ER and ICU shared the same area. Now, ICU inpatients can rest and recover in a calm, dedicated environment, away from the hustle of the emergency room.
Bay State Veterinary Emergency and Specialty Services Moves and now Offers Advanced Cancer Care
Bay State Veterinary Emergency and Specialty Services (BSVESS), the sister hospital of Ocean State Veterinary Specialists, has undergone an impressive transformation. The hospital has recently relocated to a beautifully renovated facility and expanded its offerings to include Radiation Oncology and Medical Oncology, positioning itself at the forefront of veterinary cancer care. BSVESS is now home to one of the few veterinary radiation oncology centers in the world equipped with a Varian Edge linear accelerator. This cutting-edge technology features both photon and electron radiation beam capabilities and an advanced multileaf collimator, which significantly enhances precision. Unlike older collimator systems, the multileaf collimator within the Varian Edge allows the radiation beam to conform more precisely to the shape of a tumor. This innovation minimizes damage to surrounding healthy tissues while delivering an effective radiation dose directly to cancer cells.
The Varian Edge linear accelerator’s efficiency also enables shorter treatment sessions, making it possible for many patients to be treated on an outpatient basis.
Dr. Kevin Ware, BSVESS’s dedicated Radiation Oncologist, brings over 12 years of experience in veterinary radiation therapy to the hospital. With the Varian Edge technology at his disposal, Dr. Ware is committed to delivering compassionate and cutting-edge care to pets battling cancer. With this expansion, BSVESS solidifies its position as a leader in advanced veterinary oncology, offering hope and high-quality care to pets and their families across the region.
