The Beat Goes On

The Cardiovascular system both supplies and is affected by all other body systems, so having a pet with a healthy heart is important. Our cardiologist, Dr. Adam Kane, is board certified by the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (ACIVM) in the subspecialty of veterinary cardiology. Dr. Kane specializes in diagnostic imaging, minimally invasive surgery and medical management to provide your pet with the optimum care it needs to live a healthy life. Patients are commonly referred for cardiac evaluation due to such issues as heart murmurs, abnormal heart rhythms, adverse respiratory signs (coughing, trouble breathing), and collapsing fainting. The other doctors in the hospital also internally refer patients if they detect a new heart murmur or rhythm disturbance, especially if the patient is going to be undergoing anesthesia for a procedure. This team approach ensures the best possible care for every patient that comes to OSVS.

ADAM M. KANE

BOARD CERTIFIED—CARDIOLOGY

Dr. Adam Kane is originally from snowy Syracuse, NY and attended the University of Rochester where he received his bachelor’s degree in molecular genetics in 2003. He attended the New York State College of Veterinary Medicine at Cornell University for veterinary school and graduated in 2008. Following veterinary school, he completed his small animal rotating internship here at Ocean State Veterinary Specialists. He worked as an emergency doctor in Syracuse after the internship. He then moved to Raleigh, NC to participate in research on the golden retriever model of muscular dystrophy with North Carolina State University and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He returned to the north east for his cardiology residency at the Angell Animal Medical Center in Boston, MA where he became board certified in cardiology in 2014. Dr. Kane is very excited to return to Ocean State as our first full-time cardiologist.

Dr. Kane loves all things cardiac, although he takes particular interest in electrophysiology/arrhythmias and interventional medicine.

In his personal time, Dr. Kane enjoys being active and exercising, watching movies, being a die-hard Syracuse basketball fan (go Orange!), and spending time with his wife, Missy, and his adopted greyhound, Bannon.

Advanced Patient Care

The heart of the cardiology service is the ability to perform high quality echocardiographic studies, which means ultrasound examination of the heart and large blood vessels. The echo machine includes advanced functions including 3-dimensional imaging, which allows for more in depth assessment of cardiac structure and function. Other tools available for patient evaluation include EKG, digital radiography, continuous EKG telemetry for hospitalized patients, and 24 hour EKG recording with Holter monitors for outpatient use. Our cardiologist sees patients by appointment, and also through consultation on inpatients, and directly manages some hospitalized cardiac patients as well.

The Future of Care

The cardiologist is also able to perform minimally invasive, interventional cardiac surgeries through the use of our digital fluoroscopy machine. This technology allows us to more thoroughly assess various cardiac diseases and enables us to observe the cardiovascular structures in real-time x-ray video. The interventional procedures that we will be offering include:

  • Permanent pacemaker implantation
  • Patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) occlusion
  • Pulmonic stenosis balloon valvuloplasty
  • Angiographic evaluation of other congenital heart diseases

Our cardiologist stays abreast of the newest techniques available for the diagnosis and treatment of cardiac disease, thus providing our patients with the most advanced therapies available in veterinary medicine. If you believe your pet would benefit from the services provided by the cardiologist at OSVS, please speak to your primary care veterinarian about a referral.
