Training Programs for Veterinarians

Ocean State Veterinary Specialists is a large and busy 24-hour emergency and specialty referral center located in East Greenwich, Rhode Island. The hospital is a 26,000 sq. ft. facility offering referral and emergency services to the RI, eastern CT, and southern MA areas. We are in the process of expanding and adding 10,000 additional square footage to the hospital. There is no general practice associated with the hospital. Equipment includes digital radiography, ultrasound, CT, MRI, fluoroscopy, laparoscopy, mechanical ventilation, telemetry, and state-of the-art monitoring equipment. There are twenty specialists currently on staff in the disciplines of surgery, medicine, critical care, cardiology, neurology, radiology, ophthalmology, oncology and exotics. The emergency clinicians are all internship-trained and experienced. There are residents and interns in Emergency/Critical care and Surgery.

We are located in Rhode Island, the beautiful Ocean State – and close to all of New England’s offerings. East Greenwich is in the middle of the state of Rhode Island on the west shore of Narragansett Bay. It is close to scenic Newport and coastal beaches, and approximately one hour from Boston. It is possible to live in rural or suburban areas, or in the city of Providence and be a short driving distance from the hospital.

Small Animal Internship

The internship at Ocean State Veterinary Specialists provides a depth and breadth of training that is unmatched, in an environment that is supportive and fun. OSVS has a very busy ER and specialty referral practice. Interns have the opportunity to see a diverse and challenging caseload, with the continuous availability of experienced ER doctors and specialists to guide them. There are four criticalists in support of the ER service, and a commitment to high quality didactic learning as well as strong supervision for case management. Interns are well prepared, by the end of the year, to work in any clinical situation – from general practice to high-paced emergency practices – as well as to perform well in a residency. Interns often choose to stay on as emergency doctors because of the level of medicine they get to practice and the collegial feel of the hospital.

This is a combined advanced training program in both Emergency Medicine and Emergency Surgery. The goal is to train doctors to provide high quality emergency services including surgery. This is the kind of training we would like our emergency doctors to have, and we think this will make the doctors extremely marketable for emergency jobs in high quality, specialty and emergency centers. While this program is not intended as a stepping stone to residency, several of our graduates have gone on to complete surgery residencies. The emergency service at OSVS is extremely busy, and much of the surgical caseload comes from the emergency service. The intern will spend approximately 40% of their time on emergency/critical care shifts, working under the supervision of criticalists, ECC residents and experienced emergency doctors.

Advanced Emergency/Surgery Internship

ECC Residency

Ocean State Veterinary Specialists offers a highly respected residency program in Emergency and Critical Care medicine. OSVS has a very busy ER, and the emergency service manages the majority of the inpatients in the hospital. Residents have the opportunity to see a diverse and challenging caseload, as well as learn to mentor and support interns and emergency doctors. There are four criticalists in support of this residency, and a commitment to high quality didactic learning as well as strong supervision for case management. Residents are well prepared for boards (high first-time pass rate), and are very capable clinical criticalists – able to run an ER, supervise interns and residents, and manage the most critical of patients.

Ocean State Veterinary Specialists (OSVS) is an official site for external rotations for externships at many of the country’s veterinary schools. Students are welcome to come to OSVS during their third or fourth years. The externship program offers students an opportunity to learn about the emergency/specialty referral private practice environment. Externs will have ample opportunity to strengthen their medical knowledge base and clinical competency while here. Any student considering the internship program at OSVS is encouraged to spend time here as an extern to learn more about the hospital and the program. Externships can be scheduled for as little as one week or as long as four weeks. Externs do not have assigned responsibilities, but instead are expected to participate in any areas of specific interest to them.
