Specialty Care
When you bring your pet to OSVS, your pet is cared for by a top specialist in that particular field. This is a level of patient care that is simply unmatched. The specialists utilize a team approach to ensure that your pet gets the best care possible. We know what is possible in veterinary medicine – we know what we would do for our own pets – and you should expect nothing less for your own.
Emergency Care
We come in to work to save lives. Our exceptional group of emergency doctors is trained to handle anything that might happen to your pet. The emergency service is overseen by board-certified specialists in emergency medicine and critical care. Our days begin with rounds, where we discuss every single admitted patient with the entire team. Your pet is watched around the clock by an elite team of nurses. Together, we care for your beloved companion as we would our own.
Your Love, Our Passion
OSVS exists because we believe in a different model of care for pet owners. As one of the country’s largest veterinary hospitals, we believe in making world-class veterinary care accessible to as many pets as possible. Through passion, innovation and empathy we’ve built a veterinary hospital as it should be. Where the animals come first. We know how much your pet means to you. Your bond is precious and irreplaceable. And when your pet is family, you need to know that you are doing right by them. From us, you will never get any less.
We Built it For You
OSVS was started by a husband-and-wife veterinary team who wanted to bring exceptional specialty care and 24-hour emergency services to the pets of Rhode Island and their families. We took some of the best ideas from university veterinary schools and created a teaching hospital that helps train the next generation of veterinarians. By recruiting some of the best and brightest doctors, maximizing efficiency and creating a business plan that is focused on providing care over profit, we have created a state-of-the-art hospital that gives each pet the best possible care and best chance for quality and quantity of life. We are united by a simple belief, if we treat every pet as we would treat our own, then we will be successful. This mission has attracted an elite team of over 300 veterinary professionals who work hard every day for a simple reason… we believe in the bond that you share with your pet. We exist to protect it.

What your neighbors say…
No one ever wants to have to go to Ocean State oncology, usually not a good sign for your pet. But when you have a vet like Dr. Alexander, it makes such a difference. From my first visit, he was so very kind, warm, caring and empathetic. He explained what he thought he could do to help and left the decision up to me. That was May 2022 for Snowy and August 2022 for Blizzy and my girls are doing well thanks to Dr. Alexander. I have so much respect for that young man. I have met his team and they are all terrific, but the one team member that is always there for me is Lynne and I don’t know what I would do without her at my appointments – she is wonderful! Both Dr. Alexander and Lynne are incredible, and Ocean State is very lucky to have them as well as the rest of his team. I am so grateful for Ocean State, but especially for my Dr. Alexander.
My husband and I are beyond grateful for the amazing team at OSVS. Our cat, Winnie, started having trouble breathing and they had us rush her right in. After some testing it was discovered, she had a mass in her chest. To say the least we were a wreck, the possibility of a lymphoma meant we wouldn’t have much time left with her. She ended up having to stay a couple days for oxygen and more testing so we could get an accurate diagnosis. Inevitably we opted for surgery once we realized that it was likely a thymoma and had a much better prognosis. She’s been through surgery, recovery, and is now home and healthy again. Every step of the way someone was there to keep us updated via email or phone call when she was in for testing making sure to fully explain everything and answer any questions we had. When it came time for surgery, Dr. Coronado gave me a call right before taking her in just to let me know how things were going. During recovery she had a few hiccups, but they kept us up to date on her status multiple times a day and even sent us a photo of her so we could see her. Every single person there from the emergency vets, the critical care team, surgical team, to the support staff gave Winnie their fullest attention and amazing care. She couldn’t have been in better hands. To us, the cost of treatment paled in comparison to the quality of care she received and the years we’ve just bought her by performing the surgery. I’d bring my pets here a thousand times over.
I had to bring my cat here over this past weekend due to him eating a yellow lily. My cat had to stay there for a few days and we had a great experience with the doctors, techs, and reception. Everyone was extremely nice. The doctors always called with an update in a timely manner. The techs emailed me every morning with an update and a picture of my cat in hospital. I would highly recommend this facility to anyone. Although expensive (to be expected of ER), the price was not as bad as I had expected for two over nights there. Thank you OSVS staff for taking good care of my cat!
Yesterday I brought my dog in for an urgent ultrasound. Seamless customer service. I had a phone call with Dr. Ann Klocke who took time to explain the procedure, all of the concerns about my dog and answered all of my questions compassionately and patiently. These individuals have the hardest job in the world. They take care of our sick or injured pets. Thankfully, Ocean State offers specialty services so we don’t have to drive to Tufts! Thank you for being so caring to both me and my dog. I’ve been happy every time I’ve been here for both my dog and my cats.
Very happy with the care my cardiac cat has received here at OSVS, both from his wonderful cardiologist Dr. Kane and the ER doctors he was monitored by while being hospitalized after being diagnosed with congestive heart failure. Communication was excellent, both doctors whose care he was under were fantastic, very thorough and kind, and I felt very comfortable leaving Boo there overnight to be stabilized in oxygen. The techs were thoughtful enough to send a picture and an update this morning before we had spoke with his doctor! Can’t recommend OSVS highly enough and their care during this pandemic is amazing. Thank you so much to all who cared for Boo!
